4 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Marketing Agency
Before you sign with a marketing agency, ask these four questions. A good partner will have clear answers to all of them.
Hiring a marketing agency is a big decision. It costs money, it costs time, and it means handing part of your business's voice to someone else. Before you sign anything, ask four questions. A good partner will have clear answers to all of them.
These aren't trick questions. They're the same ones we'd want answered if we were sitting on your side of the table. Here's what each one is really asking, and what a straight answer sounds like.
1. What will this change in my business?
Start with the outcome, not the deliverables. A list of posts, flyers or web pages tells you what you'll get. It doesn't tell you why you're getting it.
A good answer connects the work to something you actually care about: more calls, more people through the door, a booth people stop at, a website you're proud to hand out. If the agency can't explain what's supposed to be different once the work is done, they're selling activity, not results.
Listen for specifics about your business. If the pitch sounds like it could be for any company in any city, it probably is.
2. How will we measure it?
Once you know what should change, ask how you'll both know it changed. That could be website inquiries, a promo code that gets redeemed, sign-ups at an event, or simply asking every new customer how they heard about you.
The measurement doesn't have to be fancy. It has to be agreed on before the work starts. Otherwise every check-in turns into a debate about whether things are "going well."
Be careful with answers built only around numbers that are easy to grow and hard to connect to revenue. Views and likes can be useful signals, but they shouldn't be the whole story.
3. Who will actually do the work?
This one gets skipped more often than it should. The person who pitches you is not always the person who designs your flyer, writes your posts or builds your site.
That's not automatically a problem. Plenty of good shops work in teams. But you should know who's touching your project, who you talk to when something is off, and whether that changes after the contract is signed.
Ask to see work from the people who will actually be on your account. Ask who answers the email when there's a typo on a banner the week of your event.
4. What do you need from me?
Every agency needs something from the client: logins, photos, approvals, product details, a decision about which offer to lead with. Projects stall when nobody says that out loud at the start.
A good partner will tell you up front how much of your time they need, what they need first, and what happens if feedback comes in late. If the answer is "nothing, we handle everything," be careful. Nobody knows your business better than you do, and the work shows it when the owner isn't involved at all.
What clear answers sound like
You're not looking for perfect answers. You're looking for direct ones. Short sentences. Real names. Honest limits. A partner who says "that's not something we do" is more useful than one who says yes to everything and figures it out later.
It also helps when the work is written down. A clear scope, clear pricing and a clear starting point make these four questions easier to answer, because the answers are already on paper. That's why our packages spell out what's included, from the Flame On starter at $1,225 to All The Heat at $1,875, with retainers from $1,450 a month for ongoing work.
Ask us, too
At STS Media we've done design, print and web out of Cleveland since 2011. That covers print and trade show displays, graphic design and branding, and websites. Ask us these four questions. We'll answer every one.
If we're not the right fit for what you need, we'll say so. A good first conversation should leave you clearer about your next step, whoever you end up working with.
Ready to talk it through? Start a project brief and tell us what you want to change.
