Business Signs That Work in a Cleveland Winter
Short days, snow banks and wind: how to choose and place signs that still work in winter. Plus 10% off signage Dec 7 to Dec 13.
Winter is hard on signs. It gets dark before most people leave work. Snow piles up exactly where your sidewalk sign used to stand. Wind finds every loose corner. And salt spray coats anything near the road.
None of that means you should stop using signs from December to March. It just means planning them a little differently. This guide covers how to pick and place signs that keep working when the weather turns. If your storefront could use a refresh, the timing helps: from Monday, December 7 through Sunday, December 13, 2026, signage is 10% off. The discount applies automatically at checkout, and code SIGNS10 works as a backup.
Design for short days
In winter, a lot of people see your sign in low light, on the way to work in the morning or on the drive home after dark. That changes what good design looks like:
- Go big on contrast. Dark text on a light background, or light on dark. Low-contrast color pairs that look stylish in July can disappear at dusk.
- Use fewer, larger words. A sign seen from a moving car gets a glance. Your name, what you do and one detail, such as "Open" or a phone number, is plenty.
- Pick bold, simple type. Thin and script fonts get hard to read in low light and at a distance.
- Think about what lights it. If a sign sits near a porch light, a streetlight or your window glow, it will be seen. If it sits in a dark corner, it will not.
Place signs above the snow line
After a few storms, plows and shovels build snow banks along curbs and walkways. A sign that sits low can vanish by January.
- Set ground signs back from where snow gets piled, not right at the curb.
- Mount banners high enough to clear snow banks and parked cars.
- Check your signs after every storm. A quick brush-off keeps them doing their job.
Picking the right sign for winter
Yard signs (from $24.99)
Yard signs are affordable and easy to swap out, which makes them great for seasonal messages, job sites and events. The winter catch is frozen ground. If you can, place stakes before the ground freezes hard, or choose spots near the building where the soil stays workable.
A-frame signs (from $139.99)
A sidewalk A-frame tells foot traffic you are open and what is on offer today. In winter, weigh it down against the wind, bring it inside at night, and keep it out of the path of shovels and plows. Wipe off salt spray now and then so it stays readable.
Vinyl banners (from $24.99)
Banners cover a lot of space for the money and work well on fences, building faces and storefront windows. For winter, make sure every grommet is secured. A banner that is tied down tight handles wind far better than one that can flap.
Vehicle magnets (from $29.99)
Your vehicle is a sign that goes wherever you go. Magnets make that easy without a permanent wrap. In winter, apply them to a clean, dry surface, and take them off now and then to clean underneath, since salt and moisture can get trapped behind them.
Make the message match the season
Winter is a good time to tell people what changed. A few messages that tend to earn their space:
- Holiday and winter hours. People want to know before they make the trip.
- "Open" and "Parking in back." Simple directions matter more when the weather is bad.
- Seasonal offers. Gift cards, winter services and holiday specials.
- New year announcements. If something is changing in January, start telling people in December.
Keep seasonal messages on the pieces you swap out, like yard signs and A-frame inserts. Keep evergreen messages, like your name and what you do, on the pieces that stay up.
Get the artwork right before it goes outside
A sign is read from much farther away than a flyer, so artwork that looks fine on your screen may not hold up on the street. Before you order, view your design zoomed out to a small size on your monitor. If you cannot read it, neither can a driver. Our artwork templates help with sizing, and every print order includes a free artwork review before it goes to press.
