Your Design Is Done. Now Make It Look Real.

From the STS Design Kitchen pantry: five tools for mockups and upscaling, from Mockey to Topaz Gigapixel, and where to start.

Your Design Is Done. Now Make It Look Real.

Your design is done. Now make it look real.

A flat design file is hard for most people to picture. Put that same design on a shirt, a box or a phone screen and suddenly everyone gets it. And when you need that design bigger than the original file allows, you need a way to enlarge it without turning it into mush.

From the STS Design Kitchen pantry, here are five tools for mockups and upscaling.

The five tools

  1. Mockey (mockey.ai): free AI mockups for apparel, packaging and devices.
  2. Magnific (magnific.com): an AI upscaler that adds detail as it enlarges.
  3. Topaz Gigapixel (topazlabs.com): desktop upscaling for print-size enlargements.
  4. Krea Enhance (krea.ai): upscales and sharpens right in the browser.
  5. FLORA (flora.ai): an infinite canvas that chains AI models together.

Mockups: show it in context

Mockey is the mockup tool on this list. It makes free AI mockups for apparel, packaging and devices, so you can show a logo on a shirt, a label on a package or a website on a screen.

Mockups are useful well beyond looking nice. They help you catch problems early: a logo that's too small on a shirt, a label that gets lost on a busy package, text that's unreadable on a phone. They also make approvals easier, because people can react to something that looks real instead of imagining it.

Upscaling: make it bigger without losing it

Upscaling is the other half of this list, and it matters most when a design has to grow. A graphic that looks fine on a screen can fall apart when it's printed large. Three of these tools tackle that in different ways.

Magnific is an AI upscaler that adds detail as it enlarges. Instead of just stretching the pixels, it fills in detail as the image gets bigger.

Topaz Gigapixel is desktop upscaling for print-size enlargements. It runs on your own computer and is aimed squarely at taking images up to the size you need for print.

Krea Enhance upscales and sharpens right in the browser. Nothing to install, which makes it a quick option when you just need a cleaner, larger version of an image.

One honest note: AI upscaling can add detail that wasn't in the original. Always look closely at the result, especially faces, text and fine patterns, before you use it on something that matters.

Chaining it all together

FLORA is a different kind of tool. It's an infinite canvas that chains AI models together. Rather than doing one job, it's a place to connect several steps into one workflow. If you find yourself bouncing between tools for the same kind of project over and over, a canvas like this is worth exploring.

Not sure where to start? Try Topaz Gigapixel.

If you're working toward print, start with Topaz Gigapixel. It's built for print-size enlargements, and getting the size right is the step that most often trips people up when a design moves from screen to paper.

Getting a file ready to print

Whether you're upscaling a photo for a banner or mocking up a shirt before you order, a few checks save headaches:

  • Know your final size first. Upscale to fit the size of the piece you're actually printing, not just "bigger."
  • Zoom in before you send it. Look at the result up close. If edges look smeared or details look invented, try again or go back to a better original.
  • Keep the original. Save the upscaled version as a new file so you can always start over.

When you're ready to print, upload your artwork. Every print order gets a free artwork review, so we'll take a look at your file before it prints. You can browse everything we print in the shop, from flyers starting at $24.99 to vinyl banners from $24.99.

Save this list. If you'd rather leave the mockups and file prep to us, our design services can take it from here.
